We know that Brahms took an active interest in Baroque music throughout his life. It can thus hardly be by chance that he chose a theme from one of Handel's harpsichord suites for his 25 variations. The variations allow for iridescent colours and moods in the style of Beethoven's characteristic variations. In keeping with the source, however, the work also features allusions to Baroque models - embellishments, pedal points - and ends in a grandly laid-out fugue with a triumphant build-up. Opus 24 unquestionably deserves its reputation as the composer's most important variation cycle. Il est bien connu que Brahms s'intéressa activement à la musique baroque tout au long de sa vie. Ainsi n'est-il donc pas surprenant qu'il ait choisi un thème d'une suite pour clavecin de Händel pour en écrire 25 variations. Brahms plonge les différentes variations dans des couleurs et des atmosphères toujours renouvelées à la manière des variations de caractère de Beethoven. Conformément à son modèle, l'oeuvre contient aussi des références constantes à la musique baroque - ornements, pédales - et s'achève sur une grande fugue culminant en une progression finale triomphale. L'opus 24 doit certainement être considéré comme le cycle de variations le plus important de Brahms. Dass Brahms sich zeit seines Lebens intensiv mit Barockmusik beschäftigte, ist bekannt. So kommt es auch nicht von ungefähr, dass er sich ein Thema aus einer Händel'schen Cembalosuite vornahm, um darüber 25 Variationen zu schreiben. Brahms taucht die einzelnen Variationen in immer neue Farben und Stimmungen in der Art der Charaktervariationen Beethovens. Entsprechend der Vorlage enthält das Werk aber auch durchgängig Anklänge an barocke Vorbilder - Verzierungen, Orgelpunkte - und endet in einer groß angelegten Fuge, die mit einer triumphalen Steigerung endet. Opus 24 ist sicher als Brahms' bedeutendster Variationenzyklus anzusehen.
