On Aztec Botanical Names
The Austrian physician Dr. Blas Pablo Reko is an important pioneer of Mexican ethnobotany. He played a key role both in the identification of 'ololiuqui', the Mexican shamanic morning glory seeds (Turbina corymbosa), and 'teonanacatl', the sacred mushroom. Reko's work has been overlooked by many modern researchers because his publications are rare and in most cases difficult to get. One of his most important classics, 'De los Nombres Botanicos Aztecas' (1919), is now available for the first time both as a book and in translation. The well-known pharmacognosist ans distinguished writer Jonathan Ott translated, edited and commented 'On Aztec Botanical Names'.
