Bullfighting and excision, two-faced traditions

Diomandé Zinié Ella
The history of peoples is based on traditions that are at the same time similar and different. In the case of bullfighting in Spain and female circumcision in the Ivory Coast, the protocol procedures, the use of blunt objects and the existence of a victim and an executioner establish the link. However, if the purely entertaining and professional characters give bullfighting its singularity, the initiatory particularity and the dependence on tradition are specific to excision. Clearly, bullfighting embodies openness to modernity, while female circumcision maintains tradition by closing itself off to any modern trend.
